This is an 1800s steel No. 28 Prince padlock, with elaborate inscriptions and a working keyhole cover and key. This padlock shows beautiful patina, and bears tool markings that indicate it was handmade by craftsmen long ago.
Inscriptions include “LEVERS,” “No REGD,” “28 Prince,” “Fine Lock,” and “Trade Mark,” as well as lovely flourish designs. In the center of the back, the number “6” is inscribed. The key itself bears the inscription of a star symbol.
The padlock works and is in great condition for its age. The lock does open and latch closed, albeit with a little bit of play—as one could expect from a lock of its age. A quick cleaning of its inner mechanisms would likely cause the latching lever to operate like new.
